Korean Black Day (블랙데이 짜장면데이)
February 14th is valentines day and most people celebrate this holiday by getting loved ones chocolates, flowers, and other presents or sweets. However some people are solo or without loved ones to share with. These people have a day to themselves called Black Day. Black Day is celebrated on February 15th in South Korea and it is for singles who didn't receive gifts on valentines day. Also some people who feel like their partner didn't give them enough chocolate or presents can join in too.
The day is quite light hearted and consists of the single people eating Jajang noodles or Jajamyeon noodles along or with their other solo friends. These noodles are created with a dark sauce that resembles dirt to some unwary people which is why the holiday is named black day. The holiday is featured in many dramas and has become a part of korean culture.
Outside of Korea this holiday is almost non-existent and is only usually celebrated by korean expats as black Jajamyeon noodles are hard to come by.
The holiday is quite fun and more of a social event thatn a sad day as you can eat with your high school/college buddies or even your co-workers. So if you are ever in Korea on February 15th be sure to have some black noodles with your friends.
