The Five Stages of Foreigners in Korea
The Five Stages of Foreigners in Korea
1. The normal person: lived in Korea for under a month or is just traveling through Korea. These people are very excited and are always found at museums and tourist spots. They have not succumbed to the lifestyle yet.
2. The semi normal person: lived in Korea for over a month. They have exhausted the museums and tourist attractions. They are starting to venture into bars maybe once every two weeks. They started to enter the lifestyle.
3.The mid way people: lived in Korea for over six months. They enjoy drinking on the weekends but still show up on time for work. You'll never find them at museums or tourist spots. They are almost at the point of no return.
4. The mid crazy person: lived in Korea for any period of time. They drink on weekends and during the week sometimes. They show up to work hungover or drunk from the prior night. They are arguably over the point of no return.
5. The crazy person: lived in Korea long enough to pass number four. Drinks soju everyday heavily and smokes like a steam engine. Has succumbed to the lifestyle and has reached the point of no return.
Of course this is based on my experiences and opinions. Stages may vary and may be added or deleted but the end outcome is the same.
Update
This article was written by me on February 4, 2014 when I was in a Cafe in Korea. I had lived in Korea for about five months at this point and wrote it on my findings at the time. I lived in Korea until May 4, 2017 and my five stages held its ground. The numbers held up and most foreigners fit well into the stages. I made it to maybe number three before I left with my family.
