Big (Movie Review)

Big at 30

When you were a child did you ever wish you could be an adult and do what ever you wanted? Of course almost every kid has this dream. Stay up all night and eat like a pig. While back in 1988 Tom Hanks played a role in which this scenario played out.

Josh is an average 13 year old who loves computer games and food. He and his best friend Billy are always getting into trouble and learning about girls. Josh has a crush on a young woman who he tries to impress at a carnival. Josh is disappointed when he is too short to ride the carnival ride. After being humiliated in front of his crush and finding out she has a date he gets depressed. 

During his depressive state Josh finds a fortune teller machine and spends the money to get a chance at a wish. Initially the machine doesn't work but after some persuasion it works. He wishes he was big and the coin lands in the fortune tellers mouth. A small paper is released through the machine that says your wish is granted that night there is a big storm.

Then next morning Josh wakes up and he doesn't notice anything until he goes to the washroom mirror and discovers he has become big. Now Josh has to find the fortune teller machine and wish to become small again. Him and Billy discover it will take six weeks to find out where the location of the carnival throughout the summer will be. Insanity ensues as Josh has to find a job, convince his family that he is okay, and juggle his old friends with his new friends.

Big is a great film with both drama and comedy. Young Tom Hanks is great at acting like a grown up kid. The plot is one that most people can relate too and it aged well. Big at 30 is just as good as it was the day it was released. I recommend picking it up on blu-ray or dvd.
