Knock, Knock, Run!! (Halloween Story)

It was six-thirty on Halloween night and I was behind schedule. I had just started trick or treating only an hour ago as I had some homework to finish. I hadn't met my friends yet and wasn't to worried as they probably had been out for three hours and had almost finished trick or treating at this point. The last house I went to gave a full size chocolate bar which is awesome as most houses give small chocolate bars or cheap off brand candies. I had three house left on this street before I would go to the next street. In small towns most people know each other and we usually stick to our neighborhood. As I finished up my last house I heard my name being called.

It was my friends and they had full pillowcases of candy. They were all dressed up in matching comic book hero costumes which was planned. I didn't have a hero costume so I was dressed as the grim reaper with my whole costume being black except for my white face paint. They had been trick or treating since school was out. They were going to play knock, knock and run at eighty-thirty. I decided that I would meet them at my house then. After my friends parted I continued trick or treating.

The rest of my trick or treating went well. I got a few sodas, bags of chips and full sized chocolate bars. At eight I wrapped up and decided to walk home to meet my friends. Along the way home I passed some stragglers getting in the last of their trick or treating. Usually kids would quit around eight but some older people kept going til ten or so. The people still trick or treating had minimal costumes at best and probably just wanted candy rather than celebrate Halloween.

I arrived at my house at eight-twenty and dropped my candy off in my room. I had a glass of water and made a quick ham sandwich as I waited for my friends to arrive. They arrived at eight-thirty exactly and we left for a night of shenanigans and trouble. We decided to leave our neighborhood and walk to the far end of our town. We knew some people across town but there were lots of people we didn't know so knock, knock, and run would be funner as the people wouldn't call our parents to pick us up because they didn't know us. This had happened before and it ruined the fun.

After fifteen minutes of walking we made it to our destination. We chose the northwest part of town that bordered a small bog which would  be great for escaping if the homeowner chased us. The first house we decided to target was an average sized house with an attached garage. My friends hid in the bush across the road while I went around the side of the house and ran up to the door and knocked on it a few times then ran around the house to the side of the garage. The door opened and I heard the homeowner scream happy Halloween. I ran back to my friends after waiting a few minutes.

We decided to pick a new house because we didn't want to upset the homeowner because he was a good sport. We walked down the street to another house. This house was smaller than the last house and didn't have a garage. This time my friend was going to do the knocking while I waited with the others in the bog with the others. My friend used my method and went around the side of the house and knocked on the door. The door opened immediately and my friend was confronted by two people who took hold of him. They yelled for us to come out or they would call the police. We held our ground but they kept threatening us so we eventually came out of the bog and went to the house.

The two people told us that they were sick of us and that we should of quit when they yelled the last time. We didn't understand and said we never knock on this house before. They then told us to go home because they didn't care for us or others pranking innocent people on Halloween or any other day. We left the house and went towards our neighborhood. It was Halloween so it was inevitable that many people were out pulling pranks and shenanigans. We didn't see any other people out on our way home. The streets were empty and the cool fall weather was setting in. We arrived at my house and my friends continued to their homes. My parents were home and I talked to them about trick or treating before going into my room.

In my room I checked my candy and separated my candy into two piles the good pile and the bad pile. After I had sorted my candy I went to the bathroom and got ready for bed. I got into my pajamas, brushed my teeth, and got into bed. I fell asleep within minutes. I was woken instantly to the sound of our door being knocked on. I could hear my parents get up and check the door. They didn't seem to find anyone at the door and closed the door. About five minutes later the same knocking sound occurred again. My dad this time got up alone and went to the door where he was met with darkness again. He was irritated but knew it was probably just some kids playing around with us. Nothing happened after twenty minutes so I fell back to sleep.

I was awakened my a cool feeling on my face and I immediately got up. I was confronted by a man who was quietly climbing through my window. I screamed and immediately ran to my parents room. I heard the window crash and the man obviously had ran from the house. We phoned the police and they immediately came to our house. I told them about the man and that earlier I had been playing knock, knock, run. The police asked which houses we played it on and I told them. I was still in shock as being awakened by a burglar isn't something that goes over easy. The police thanked us and said they would watch our house for the rest of the night.

Later the next morning the police called my parents and my friend's parents. The second house we played knock, knock, run on was actually the scene of a robbery. The family that lived there was tied up and left in a bedroom. The police discovered the family because I had told them the house location. The were overpowered by the two men who had talked to us. The family said the two men talked about kidnapping my friend but when they seen us all they decided against it. They had then followed us to my home and waited for my family to go to sleep and teach us a lesson. I was shocked by this and my parents were really upset. The two men hadn't been caught and were still on the loose.

Needless to say this was the last time my friends and I ever played knock, knock, run. I have since grown up and moved away from my hometown. The two men who committed this crime were never found and were assumed to be just travelling through our town. Every Halloween I still hand out candy but I make sure to lock my door and windows. I also never open my door to knocks after I go to bed unless I get a text or call. Remember to be safe and if you play tricks on people be prepared for the worst and Happy Halloween!!!
